For those who haven’t heard about the ‘The Way We Wear’ fairs, they’re vintage clothing, textiles and accessories fairs that happen around Australia throughout the year (mostly in Melbourne and Sydney). And, well, they’re pretty awesome. There’s stall after stall bursting at the seams with all manner of glittery, tactile, glamorous and outrageous clothes and other finery, and much of it is very affordable.
The best part of the whole set-up for yours truly is that the upcoming fair is in Williamstown, so for once I don’t have to haul ass out to somewhere past the el-gigantor furniture showrooms of Melbourne and into the wild blue yonder. Hooray!
Anyway, it’s on this weekend, and i thought i should put the word out as a Public Service Announcement. It’s open 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday, and there are fashion parades (oh yeah) on in the middle of the day (both days).
It costs about $10 to get in, but if you dig on this sort of stuff, it’s worth it – so much affordable vintage goodness in such a small space. Wheeee. Also, get yourself on their mailing list if you can - I can’t remember how i did it, but a couple of weeks ago i got a card giving me discount entry to this fair in the mail, so it’s definitely worth tracking down.
The theme for the Williamstown The Way We Wear Fair is ‘Fashion on the Ration’ (ie wartime fashion), so expect some sort of emphasis on 40s styling – giant shoulders, tiny waists, lots of brown and olive and burgundy…

PS They also do a Christmas version of this fair in Malvern in December, so keep your ears to the ground about that one. Word.
