Stakeout: Fryerstown Antiques Fair, Australia Day Weekend

January 29, 2009

You know, I really thought I had the measure of antiques fairs by now. The running order is usually as follows:

1. Go to some regional town.

2.  Find the town hall/leisure centre.

3.Wander around thirty to fifty stalls, gawping at stuff and making banal comments such as ‘that’s nice’ or ‘gee, that’s a big one, isn’t it?’

4. Remark that the same things are for sale that you saw last time.

5. If you’re feeling frisky, buy a lil’ somethin; if not slowly gorge yourself on scones/sausages/vanilla slice and then go home.

Right? Well, not  exactly. Fryerstown is not your run-o-the-mill antiques fair. Read the rest of this entry »

Stakeout: A Word From Tourism Tasmania

January 21, 2009

This is something I don’t say lightly, so get ready. Op shops in Tasmania are old fashioned.

The funny thing about Hobart (can’t really comment on Launceston, as I went there once and the only thing open was a Dominos and people kept offering to drag race with us…please tell me I was there on a bad day) is that there are excellent, well stocked op shops in the city centre. TVD: Not Quite Vintage, But Working On It

January 15, 2009

I realise the title of this post is unnecessarily obscure, but here cometh the explanation: today it hit me that this quaint little bloglet has turned one.  In fact, I kind of missed her birthday…how embarassment (PS does Acropolis Now count as vintage yet? Lord, how i long to blog about Effie).

Effie aside, this post marks a solid year of semi-consistent, semi-coherent ramblings about my love of All Things Olde (and nerdish factoids). There will be cake (not in the weird Daniel Day Lewis milkshake way). Or, as my all time favourite birthday card once said, Carpe Cakem (seize the cake).

Other than cake, what better way to mark the occasion than to share my semi vintage-related new year’s resolutions? I’m not a virgo, but i do love a list, so here goes nuffink: Read the rest of this entry »
